Herbert F. Hasenclever, 54, a former scientist-director at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases here, died of cancer Sept. 21 at his home in Corvallis, Mont.

He was transferred to the institute's Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton, Mont., in 1974, where he worked as a mycologist until retiring last April.

Dr. Hasenclever joined the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Institute here in 1957. He became head of the medical mycology section of the laboratory of microbiology.

He specalized in research on fungus diseases. In 1965-66, he was stationed at the institute's Middle America Research Unit in the Panama Canal Zone.

He was born in Fort Madison, Iowa. After serving in the Pacific with the Marine Corps in World War II, he attended Iowa Wesleyan College and earned a master's degree and a doctorate in bacteriology from the University of Iowa. He was an instructor there until joining NIH.

Dr. Hasenclever was the author or coauthor of more than 60 technical publications in the field of microbiology. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Microbiology, a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and belonged to the American Society of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

A former resident of Bethesda, he had been an active member of the Bethesda United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, a son, John, and a daughter, Mary Jean, all of the home, and a brother, Merle, of Fort Madison.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Hebert F. Hasenclever scholarship fund at the Citizens State Bank in Hamilton, Mont.
