In Response To: HARRINGTON, Timothy P. (Susie Gillick)

There is an entry in the 1976 History of Kossuth County about T.P. Harrington. It states:

"T.P. Harrington, continued his practice of law in Algona with L.J. Dickinson until the latter was elected to the U.S. Congress on January 1, 1919. Mr. Harrington was elected as a Representative to the Iowa Legislature from Kossuth County in the fall of 1916, and was re-elected two year later, serving for the years 1917 through 1920. He was appointed and served as Kossuth County Drainage Attorney for many years; was joined by L.A. Winkel as an Associate in August, 1928, for one year; and thereafter continued practicing law alone until his death in 1933."

I checked the death records of Kossuth County and they show a death certificate for T.P. Harrington showing his birth on 12-17-1867 and his death on 5-17-1933. The records of the Clerk of Court show that he did have an estate administration -- being probate File #3734. There is also an estate for a Bernice Harrington -- that number is #3738. Our courthouse also has photos of deceased lawyers who served in our county. There is a picture of Timothy Harrington and also one of his son, Robert Harrington. I could find no estate file for Robert. I did not check the death certificate records for Robert.

The 1976 History of Kossuth County on page 181 says:

"Robert J. Harrington, a son of T.P. Harrington, and a native of Algona, took his graduate and legal work at the State University of Iowa, obtaining his law degree in 1933, and started practicing law in the office left vacant by the death of his father a few months earlier in the same year. He was immediately joined by Joseph D. Lowe under the firm name of Harrington & Lowe, which continued until about 1942, when he entered the military service, legal department, of the Adjutant General's office in Des Moines, Iowa, where he is still stationed."

If interested, I can provide you with the forms needed to order death certificates from the Kossuth County Recorder and I might be able to get copies made of the pictures. I know the gentlemen who cares for them and I believe he would let me borrow them long enough to have them copied at our local K-Mart. I could also check out the probate files if you would like copies. Unfortunately, I don't know of any Harringtons that live in the area, but if you could provide me with other surnames, there may be someone who might be a descendant.

I hope this information is of help to you.
