In the abbreviated History of Kossuth County published in the July 12, 2001 edition of The Algona Upper Des Moines newspaper the following is written:

"The Milwaukee Railroad, which had been completed to Algona in 1870, reached the western edge of Kossuth County in July of 1978. This inspired W.H. Ingham and Lewis H. Smith to plat the site of Whittemore in August of 1878. The plat was filed for record on April 12, 1879. The town of Whittemore received its name from that of Don J. Whittemore, who, in that early day, was the chief surveyor of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. W. H. Ingham and Lewis H. Smith, who owned the land on which the town was to be built, selected the name."

More information is contained in the History of Kossuth County by B.F. Reed originally published in 1913.
