A well-known Algonan, Otto H. Schmidt, 73 died suddenly at St. Ann hospital Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, at 8 a.m. Mr. Schmidt suffered chest pains Monday afternoon, was taken to the hospital later in the day where he died after spending a restful night. A heart condition was cause of death.
Funeral services have tentatively been set for Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church. Arrangements are in charge of McCullough's Funeral Chapel and will be announced later.
Otto Hansen Schmidt was born Dec. 4, 1882, at North Schleswig, Denmark. He came to the United States at the age of 17 and became a naturalized citizen. He was baptized in the Lutheran church in Denmark, but had been a member of the Methodist church for many years.
Mr. Schmidt was section foreman at Burt and Fenton for 20 years and farmed south of Bancroft for five years before moving to Algona with his family in 1940. Following a years retirement, Mr. Schmidt was employed at the hemp plant here during the war, then was employed at the Algona Theater from 1944 until the time of his death.
He married Alice H. Hudson at Burt Dec. 1, 1913. Mrs. Schmidt, a son, Gordon, Algona and two grandchildren, Michael and Nancy Schmidt, survive. Also surviving are two sisters, Katrina and Frederikke Schmidt, who live in Denmark.
