FORMER ALGONA MERCHANT DIES
John Goeders, 91, Was in Business 50 Years
Algona—
John Goeders, 91, for more than 50 years one of Algona’s leading merchants, died at his home here at 3:30 Thursday morning following an illness of only a few days. He had been in poor health recently.Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 at St. Cecelia’s Catholic church with solemn requiem high mass.
Mr. Goeders was born in Luxembourg, Feb. 12, 1854, and was brought to the United States by his parents in 1854. For a short time the family farmed near Dubuque and in 1889, they moved to a farm in Riverdale township, Kossuth county. When John was 17 years old, he came to Algona and clerked in the Theo Chrischilles, Sr. store, which this year is celebrating its 75th anniversary. He worked there 4 years.
In 1888, he started in business for himself and in 1890 purchased a business lot at the corner of State and Dodge streets and continued in business till he retired in 1936.
He was married May 14, 1878, to Jane Zigrang of St. Joe. They were parents of 3 children, 2 of whom, Mrs. Charles Kennedy, St. Paul, and Dennis Goeders, Clear Lake, survive. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren.
