For a short time the family farmed near Dubuque and in 1889, they moved to a farm in Riverdale township, Kossuth county. In 1888, he started in business for himself and in 1890 purchased a business lot at the corner of State and Dodge streets and continued in business till he retired in 1936.
He was married May 14, 1878, to Jane Zigrang of St. Joe. They were parents of 3 children, 2 of whom, Mrs. Charles Kennedy, St. Paul, and Dennis Goeders, Clear Lake, survive. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren.
