Sept 1, 1949 - Algona Upper Des Moines - Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 24, at the St. Joseph Catholic church for Hiram W. Ries, 58, St. Joe farmer. Mr. Ries died of a heart attack about 11:15 Saturday, Aug. 20 while driving home from LuVerne. As a result of the attack, the car left the road and entered the ditch but remained upright. In the car at the time were Mrs. Ries, Mr. and Mrs. George Schaller, and a nephew, and a granddaughter. No one was injured in the accident.

Mr. Ries was born October 29, 1890, son of William and Regina Ries. He and his family moved to their present location some years ago. He has been a farmer all his life. He formerly lived a Gilmore City. The family address is now Bode. Father Theobald conducted the services and burial was at Calvary cemetery at St. Joe. Pallbearers were Jim Satern, Ed Ries, Ray Schaller, Zola Pizel, Howard Kelley, and Bitz Berte.
