August 27, 1909 - Algona Courier - A most distressing occurrence took place last Sunday afternoon near West Bend, it being the drowning of a fine young man, Nicholas Illg, son of Edward Illg of near Ottosen. Young Illg and a number of others went to bathe in Nylen's Lake, four miles west of West Bend, and the young man got beyond his depth and his companions were unable to rescue him. The drowning occurred about 4 o'clock.

Later in the evening the body was recovered and brought to West Bend, and on Monday a coroner's jury composed of Welt Miller, H.M. Mantz, and J.S. Robinson, was impaneled, who found that death resulted from accidental drowning.

The funeral was held from the St. Joseph Catholic church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The young man would be 21 years of age if he had lived until the 8th day of December next. He leaves to mourn his death his father, one sister and two brothers, his mother having died about two years ago. The Courier tenders sympathy to the bereaved family.
