May 9, 1902 - Algona Courier - Arnold Hilbert of St. Joe was one of the jurors at this term of court. He was 49 years of age and was in good health so far as his friends knew. He was released as a juror on Friday evening, but on account of the rain remained in Algona that night and went home Saturday morning. He found some of his fence had been injured by the storm and worked at it until dinner time. At dinner he complained of not feeling well, though he ate a fairly good dinner. He then lay down and the ill-feeling increased, and in an hour he was dead. No doctor could have been secured in time, and it is probable that no good could have been done for him anyhow, as it must have been a case of heart failure.

Mr. Hilbert was a native of Luxemberg and came to America in 1857, settling in Jackson county where be lived for some years. About 24 years ago he moved to Humboldt county, near Livermore, and about 15 years ago he moved to his late home at St Joe. His wife died about a year ago, leaving him nine children, all of whom are living & 4 of whom are married.

He had rented his farm and was prepared to take life easy when the death summons came. The funeral took place from the St. Joe church on Tuesday and was one of the largest ever seen in that community, an evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by his neighbors. His brother Nic of Jackson county attended. He has 2 sisters in Jackson county and one in Kansas. Peace be to his spirit.
