Sept 19, 1950 - Algona Upper Des Moines - Final rites for Mrs. Matt Hilbert, 76, were held this morning, Tuesday, from St. Cecelia's Catholic church, Father Leo Kelm officiating. Burial was in the St. Joe cemetery. The Hamilton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Ivan Kohlhaas, Alfred Kohlhaas, Ralph Kohlhaas, Gordon Hilbert, Robert Hilbert, and Richard Hilbert, all grandsons of Mrs. Hilbert.

Mary Besch was born Aug. 10, 1874, at St. Joe, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Besch. She was married to Matt Hilbert at Whittemore, Nov. 23, 1898. The family farmed for many years in the St. Joe neighborhood. The couple retired in 1938 and moved to Algona. Mrs. Hilbert died at their home in Algona early Sunday morning, suffering from a heart attack.

Surviving besides her husband are the following children: Clara, Mrs. Henry Kohlhaas, Livermore; John Hilbert, Bode; Frank Hilbert, LuVerne; Ted Hilbert, LuVerne; Laura, Mrs. Herman Becker, Irvington; and Dora, Mrs. Tom Becker, Wesley. A sister, Mrs. John Merscle, Eagle Grove, and four brothers, Theo, John and George Besch of West Bend, and Peter Besch of Algona also survive, as well as 24 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
