Alice (Wise) Phillips Obituary
B.15 Dec 1903
D.15 Sep 1951
Unknown newspaper clippingServices Here Yesterday for Mrs. Phillips – The Algona Community was shocked to learn of the sudden death Saturday, September 15, of Mrs. Alice Phillips. Her funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church, with the Rev. O.W. Brand, pastor, officiating, and burial was in East Lawn cemetery, with McCullough’s in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Phillips’ maiden name was Alice Wise, and she was born December 15, 1903 at McClean, ILL, one of twelve children of G.B. and Sarah Wise. The family came to Iowa in 1914 and farmed many years in the Sexton – Wesley neighborhood.
On August 1, 1921, the young woman was married to Henry Phillips, of Woden, and the couple started married life on a farm near that place. They came to Algona in 1936, and Mr. Phillips worked for the state highway commission till his tragic death, July 3, 1948 in a car accident near Mapleton, MN. Since then Mrs. Phillips had maintained her home, though away much of the time.
In July, Mrs. Phillips began working in Crawford County for farm publications, and two weeks ago, under sponsorship of the Methodist W.S.C.S, of which she was a member, she began a canvas of Algona and nearby territory.
One of the local women accompanied her daily and last Friday she worked as usual till late afternoon. Then she had dinner with a neighbor and went home at 11 o’clock that evening. Saturday her sister, Mrs. Nell Opheim, Sexton, entered her apartment, and found her dead in bed.
While Mrs. Phillips had not been in the best of health for some time, none of the family had realized that her condition was so serious.
Mrs. Phillips left four children, Andy of Denison; Sarah Nell, Mrs. James Stebbins, Algona; Florence, Mrs. Garnet Pickard, Forest City; and Doris, Mrs. Milton McBride, Des Moines. There are six granddaughters and one grandson.
Nine brothers and sisters also survive, Mrs. Arch Burger, Mrs. Drussila Noble, Mrs. Nell Opheim, Mack Wise all of Sexton; S.W. Wise, Mason City; Mrs. Charles Stratton, Montrose; Mrs. Dorothy Steven, Mapleton, MN; Herman Wise, Corwith; and Bill Wise, Houston, TX.
Bill was the only one of the group not able to be here for the funeral. Mrs. Phillips nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews number 125.
