Trio Who Died in Car Crash – Double funeral services are being held this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Methodist church, Algona, for Henry J. Phillips of Algona and Alfred Opheim of Sexton.

The men were killed in an automobile accident 12 miles from Mapleton, MN early Sunday morning. Lloyd Steven, a brother-in-law, of Mapleton, MN was also killed. The accident widowed three sisters: the former Alice, Dorothy and Nell Wise, daughters of Mrs. Sarah Wise, Sexton.

In the same accident, James Stebbins, of Algona, son-in-law of Mr. Phillips, escaped with only minor injuries. He was brought home from St. Joseph’s hospital at Mankato, MN Monday evening.

Services are being conducted by the Rev. O.W. Brand, pastor of the Algona church of which Mr. Phillips was a member, and the Rev. J.A. Riggs, of Wesley, Mr. Opheim’s pastor.

Burial for both will be made in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by McCullough’s.

Mr. Phillips was the son of Andrew J. and Mary Phillips; he was born on 10/31/1896 at Britt. He had his formal education in the schools of Hancock County.

Marriage to Alice Wise too place August 1, 1921 at Garner. The couple’s first home was in Hancock County from which they moved to a farm south of Sexton. In 1931 they moved from that place to Wesley and from there to Algona in 1936.

Mr. Phillips started working for the state highway department in 1933 and had since been in their employ.

He is survived by his wife, a son Andrew and a daughter Mrs. Garnet Pickard both of Woden; and daughters, Mrs. James Stebbins and Mrs. Milton McBride, both of Algona. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Phillips, brothers Warren and William, and a sister Mrs. Walter Phil all of Woden and a sister, Mrs. H.O. Smith of Sac City.

Pallbearers for Mr. Phillips are co-workers: Everett Lee, Helmer Helmers, Willard Gregson, Theo Thompson, Don Christianson and Frank Smith.
