Harvey Henry Cassens, 90, of Sigourney, died May 8, 1997, at Sigourney Manor House. He was born Oct. 10, 1906, in Plank Township east of Sigourney to Henry and Sophia Magus Cassens. He married Margaret Goeldner Sept. 11, 1929. She died Oct. 19, 1967. He married Dorothy McNamar Nov. 2, 1969. He attended Stoney Point Country School and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1925. He taught country school for many years until he started farming the Goeldner homestead in 1929. He was a breeder of Doroc hogs and Polled Hereford cattle and was a substitute mail carrier for five years. He worked at the Sale Barn for 11 years, retiring and moving to Sigourney in 1972. He served as Plank Township Trustee for 13 years and president for three years. He was a member of Plank School Board for 30 years and president for 15 years. He was a member of Sigourney Presbyterian Church and elder; charter member of Lancaster Heritage Foundation and served as director; was director of Pleasant Grove Cemetery Association; charter member of Sigourney Saddle Club; and former member of Sigourney Odd Fellows Lodge. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Kathleen Shaver and Doris Goering of Ames; a stepdaughter, Shirley McNamar of Texas; a son, Charles of Sigourney; two stepsons, Gilbert and Virgil Henley of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice LaRose Cassens; seven brothers, John, Carl, George, Ray, Casper, Edward and Nick Cassens; and two sisters, Emma Fairchild and Lydia Wallerich. The service will be 1:30 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Sigourney, the Rev. Kate Stangl officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be until 11 a.m. today at Holm Funeral Home and after 11 a.m. at the church. Pallbearers will be Charles and David Shaver, James Cassens, Dennis Goering, Mike Brown and Patrick Reeves.
