Earl Leonard Nelson, 95, of What Cheer, died Monday, June 1, 2002, at the Sigourney Care Center in Sigourney.

He was born May 4, 1907 in Redwing. Minn., the son of John and Anna (Sundberg) Nelson. He then moved to What Cheer with his family when he was three and attended the What Cheer Schools. From youth he worked at the John Nelson and Sons Clay Products in What Cheer, also known as the Brick Yard, painting and molding clay. He was united in marriage to Leona Breuklander in Delta, on Aug. 19, 1933. In the 1960's the Nelson family business was sold to Goodwins from Des Moines and he continued to work for them until retiring in the 70's. He was Grand Marshall in the 1999 4th of July Parade. He was active in the Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, was a Decon and a servant to the Lord.

He is survived by his son, Harry Earl; three daughters,Evelyn Molyneux, Darlene Dalziel and Marlene Dalziel; 13 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, on Nov. 18. 1994; three brothers, Aurthur, Bernie and Robert; and one sister, Marjorie Swain.

Funeral services were held June 6 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the Rev. Leroy Lindsey of the Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at the McFarland cemetery in What Cheer.
