Arley Ellsworth Atwood, 73, of Sigourney died of congestive heart failure on Tuesday, July 21, 1992, at Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa.

He was born June 30, 1919, near Sigourney to Ota and Jennie Molyneux Atwood. He married Marie Lucille Dyson on March 15, 1942, at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English.

He was graduated from Sigourney High School in 1937, served in the Army in World War II and lived and farmed northwest of Sigourney. He was a member and a deacon of the English River Church of the Brethren, was a member of Keokuk County Cattlemen's Association and served as Keokuk County Soil Conservation District Commissioner. He received the Iowa Outstanding Soil Conservation District Commissioner Award in 1960 and the Keokuk County Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award in 1982 and served on the Extension Council. Arley's pride and joy, besides his family and grandchildren, were the cattle and hogs he raised and the preservation of the soil he farmed.

He is survived by his wife Marie; five daughters, Neda Spiegel, Nadine Vance, Wilma Donhowe, Gwen Etter and Sharon Fritchen; one son, Duane; ten grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one step great-grandchild; two sisters, Cela Fugate and Velda Childers; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The service was 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 24 at the English River Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Eldon Coffman officiating. Burial was in the English Valley Church of the Brethren cemetery.
