Carrie May Utterback, 74, of Des Moines died July 3, 1988 at Mercy hospital in Des Moines.

She was born Feb. 22, 1914, near Pekin to John Elbert and Bessie Belle Hayes Zepp. She graduated from Martinsburg high school in 1931 and went to Iowa State Teachers College. She taught school for two years in Jefferson County and for five years in Keokuk County. She moved to Des Moines in 1945 where she was assistant manager at University Book Store for more than 40 years. She then worked at Cokesbury Book Store in Des Moines for five years. She was a charter member and Deacon of Covenant Christian Church in Des Moines and a member of Des Moines Women’s Club, having served in various capacities. She had done volunteer work for Ramsey Home for many years and also for Living History Farms. She married Kenneth LeRoy Utterback July 18, 1943 in Delta. He died Dec. 21, 1967.

She is survived by two brothers, Merel and Ralph Zepp; and two sisters, Edith Garrels and Margery Dillon.

Services were held on July 5 at Fremont Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Alice Bolen officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn cemetery in Ottumwa.
