William Thomas Baxter, 75 of What Cheer, died Jan. 22 at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

The son of William and Lula Lowe Baxter, he was born June 14, 1910 in What Cheer. He married Alice Irene McKay in Nov. 1967. He was a lifelong resident of What Cheer, owned and operated the Tastee Freez in Sigourney, and had owned the What Cheer Theatre. He had also operated the bulk truck of Ogden Oil Company and had worked for the Harden Funeral Chapel for 10 years.

He was a veteran of WWII in the U.S. Army and was a member of the University Lodge No. 242 A.F. and A.M. in What Cheer and the Lash-Jordan-Behrens American Legion Post. He was a member of the What Cheer Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife; one stepson James L. Harris; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Services were held Sat. January 15 at the Hardin Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery near What Cheer.
