Died, at his home in Delta, David Smilie,an old and respected citizen, Sabbath morning,Feb. 23, at 4 o'clock. Grandpa, as we all called him, had been sick but two weeks. Father Smilie was born in Dundee, Scotland, Aug. 1815, married Katharine Clapperton Nov. 12, 1836, and came to America in 1843. He made his home in Stubenville Ohio for a number of years. Then he moved with his family to Keokuk Co., Benton Township and lived there 20 years. When Delta started he sold the old home and came here where he started a bakery and confectionery shop. For the last seven or eight years he has not been able to work, but has been patient and cheerful. We miss the genial smile and kindly greeting. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Hanawalt of the M. E. Church at the home. Grandpa leaves behind to mourn his loss, his aged companion, two daughters, Mrs. Merryfield, and Mrs. VanNostrand, eleven grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren He was laid to rest in the Brooks cemetery near Hedrick. So ends the life of one whose life has been useful and helpful.
