Elmer Gatton, 79, of What Cheer died July 11, 1992, at Mahaska Manor Nursing Home in Oskaloosa.

He was born November 16, 1912, in Rose Hill to Sherman and Carrie Van Heukelom Gatton.

He married Darlene Hazen October 24, 1934. She died October 4, 1976. He later married Minnie Wheatley November 22,1984.

He attended country schools and farmed in the What Cheer area. He worked at University of Iowa as a custodian.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Ralph and Delmar "Chip"; three step-sons, Clyde, Robert and Eugene Wheatley; three step-daughters, Rosetta Kitzman, Joan Thomas, and Virginia Palmer; five grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren; and a brother, Merle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Marvin, Warren and Wilbur.

Funeral services were held at July 14 at Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Rev. Warren James officiating. Burial was in Garrett Cemetery near Delta.
