From what I can see, there is a Thomas Benton Smithson, born January 1850 in Missouri, married November 4, 1869 in Barry Co., MO to Lusinda Cooper who was born 1841 in Illinois. They had 2 children, John (1873) and Sarah J.(1874).
May be getting this person mixed up with the one you seek who is Thomas Smithson, born c.1851 Iowa with father born New York and mother in Kentucky. Married c.1903 to Sophie ____ born c.1867 Kentucky and second marriage for both... seen in Oxford twp., Jones County 1910 census. Only a daughter age 11 is in the household so carried from a previous marriage.
The only "Smithson" spelling age bracket 41-50 born Iowa in the 1900 census is a George W. Smithson, age 47 in Washington Twp., Jackson Co., IA. This must be a brother because the parents born in the same states but no Thomas anywhere.
Don't see another Thomas Smithson in Iowa for that time frame nor one married to Sarah Potter... will keep checking. There is a Thomas age 40 but born in Virginia and living in Kentucky 1900 but father born in VA and mother in Ireland, not the same person. Only other Thomas is the one in Missouri, age 50. I even searched for all Thomas first names in Jones and Jackson Counties and came up empty for 1900...
