I'm afraid it looks like just a coincidence.

Can't seem to find a later UK-USA link for Wooder online. I am sure
someone came into the states later but it's not readily found or
documented. I see some born in the states during the 1830s-1840s era but
not much later. At least not with that middle name or initial. Did see
that you corresponded with a Ginger France about your family. Was she able
to come up with anything?

Looking at the US Census, nothing comes up with the last name spelling
WOODER for anyone born in England for the 1920 census. In fact, there was
only 24 families showing for the entire US with the last name Wooder in
1920. Only two names come up for the 1910 census, one is a William, age 27
married and living in Paterson, Passiac County, New Jersey. No childern
named James but maybe later? The other is a single woman. Nothing comes
up for the 1900 census either.

Did find a James Wooder (age 72) in the 1910 census who spoke English but
said was born in Italy and living in Johnston, Providence County, Rhode
Island. There was a James H. Wooder (the one noted here at the Jones
County site born in Maryland and died 1915 in Iowa) as well as a James H.
Wooder, age 36 born Connecticut living in Plainville, Hartford County, CT.
