I am also interested in research on this line. I am a descendant of Caroline Spencer Clark, daughter of Elia McMahan and James Spencer, through their daughter, Eliza Jane Clark (who went by Jennie E. Clark). Eliza (Jennie) Clark married an Edward H. Lane, (and later, Joseph Richard Valentine) and we would love to find out if this was the same Edward who was the son of Clement H. Lane who lived in Jones County. (We're descended through George Wilbur Lane, son of Jane Eliza Clark and Edward Lane.) Clement mentions a son named Edward in his brief annotation in the Jones County history, but Edward never appears on census records with this family.

I have begun getting Lane relatives here to submit DNA samples to the Sorenson project (www.smgf.org). It is free, and they will mail a kit to you, with a postage-paid mailing envelope inside for return. Unfortunately, their results won't be available for 100 years, unless you have your DNA identified, such as through Relative Genetics (www.RelativeGenetics.com) which uses the same lab and only charges $100 to $250 for DNA results. We would like to find a male Lane descendant from Clement H. Lane's line to check this out with my uncle who is a direct male descendant of our Edward Lane, to see if we're related, thus if our Edward was Clement's son or someone else. (We would be happy to pay the research charges for the Clement Lane direct male descendant, as well as our own.)

In the meantime, we would love to pursue additional research on the Clark Spencer McMahan line which we have pretty much confirmed as correct. We have that Eliza (Elizabeth) McMahan was the daughter of John M. McMahan, and was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 18 Jan 1793 and died 16 June 1883 in Monticello, Jones, Iowa. I came across a McMahan history for a family in Pennsylvania, but haven't been able to verify if our Eliza McMahan is the one mentioned. I'll try to pull it out and see if this brother (John) is mentioned. I'd love to hear what evidence there is that she had a brother named John and what is known about him. Thanks -- Laura

I would love to hear from anyone on any of these lines!
