Viroqua

VIROQUA

I've been asked how the town of Viroqua got its name. Anyone know?

"I'm interested in the history of the name 'Viroqua.' We here in Viroqua, WI, have long maintained that we are the only Viroqua around, so I was very surprised to find a Viroqua on an old Iowa map (although I understand from your site that it bore that name for only a few years, and is now called 'Morley'). Do you have any further information about how the town came to be called Viroqua? Our Viroqua got its name in 1854. We wondered if a pioneer passing through our county ended up in your county and contributed the name.

"Thanks for any help you can offer.

Vernon County Museum"
