Looking at the St. Martin's cemetery listing, the elder immigrant Patrick McManus died October 31, 1886 and an obit for him appeared November 5, 1886 in the Cascade newspaper. This is "probably" where the 1840 migration year came from in that one file I found? Get someone to look that up for you (volunteer such as those on the Dubuque county site or RAOGK), then you may have your answer about that and John.

Patrick's second wife Amanda appears to be buried in a different Cascade (Protestant) cemetery, died about the same time... May 18, 1886 at age 63.

That's all I can offer by way of routes to go. Maybe the younger Patrick's obit also will give some clues?
