Funeral services for Augustus D. (Gus) Clay, 83, were held in Olin Nov.7 with graveside services at the Clarence cemetery by the Blaney-Minor post of the American Legion, Olin, in charge.
Mr. Clay died at the Maple Lawn Home of the Aged, Marion, Nov. 3.
The son of George R. and Mary Wof Clay, he was born near Hale, Jones county, Nov. 22, 1893.
A veteran of World War I, he served with the American Expeditionary forces, taking part in the Argonne-Saint-Mihiel campaigns.
He was married to Luella Baird at Lisbon July 17, 1919. He farmed in Linn county, in the Center Point-Todville-Green's Grove area for 30 years. After moving to Olin in the early 1950's he worked as a carpenter until he retired.
Mr. Clay was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist church in Olin.
He is survived by a son, Willard and 2 grandsons, Steven and Leonard Clay, all of Cedar Rapids and a sister, Mrs. Zilda Shanklaud, Olin. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters, a daughter Lucile, who died in August, 1972 and his wife, who died in July, 1977.
