17 December 1970 - The Anamosa Eureka

OLIN - Arthur Ellsworth Gilmore, 88, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Clarence Nursing home.

Masonic services were conducted by Ancient Landmark lodge of Olin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Hayden Funeral Home, Olin. A family prayer service was held at Hayden's Funeral Home at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, with memorial services at 10:30 a.m. at Hayden's. Rev. Lloyd Dutro, pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist church, Olin, conducted the services. Interment was in the Olin cemetery.

Pallbearers included Steven Gilmore, Glen Gilmore, Paul Gilmore, Matthew Aten, George Rompot and James Kohout. Mrs. Ronald Rogers was organist. Loren Hartwig was soloist. Selections included "In The Garden" and "Beyond The Sunset."

He was born Oct. 30, 1882, son of Francis M. and Elizabeth Cozart Gilmore near Hale. He grew to manhood in the Hale and Olin communities where he attended the rural schools. On Nov. 16, 1904, he was united in marriage to Jeannette Walston. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union. Mrs. Gilmore died Jan. 4, 1915.

On March 21, 1945, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sophia Joura. In his early life, Art had farmed for several years, but he and his present wife owned and operated a grocery store in Hale for 18 years. They retired and moved to Olin Jan. 1, 1962 and have made their home here since that time.

"Art", as he was generally known by the community, suffered a stroke and heart attack on Dec. 29, 1962, and gradually failed in health from that time. He entered the Clarence Nursing home July 25, 1967.

For many years he was a member of the First United Methodist church at Olin, later transferring to the church at Hale. Upon retiring to Olin, he united with St. Paul's United Methodist church and has maintained his relationship to that church since that time. He was a also a member of Ancient Landmark Lodge No. 200 A.F.&A.M. at Olin for many years and was a Past Master of that lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia; two sons, Jay Gilmore, Omaha, Nebr., and Dillon, Lisbon; two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Laverna) Johnson, Cedar Rapids; and Mrs. Robert (Bernice) Smith, Scotsdale, Ariz.; two step-sons, Ralph Joura, Interlocken, Fla.; and Art Joura, Des Moines, and one step-daughter, Mrs. Helen Farmer, Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Straight; and four brothers, Oscar, Ralph, Freeman and Roy.
