August 6, 1970 - The Anamosa Eureka

OLIN - Mrs. Grace Thompson, 79, died Wednesday, July 29, at John McDonald hospital, Monticello.

A family prayer service was held at St. Paul's church, Olin, on Friday, July 31, at 1 p.m. with memorial services at the church at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Lloyd Dutro, pastor, conducted the service. Interment was in the Olin cemetery.

Pallbearers included Alan Rohwedder, Lloyd Andre, Maurice Bonjour, Donald Starry, Arno Lawson and Kenneth Guhl.

Mrs. George Tsui was organist.

She was born Nov. 15, 1890, daughter of Amos and Icaphene Diggins Bonham, at Melbourne, Iowa. Grace's mother died when she was seven years old and she was reared by her father and a half sister. She graduated from the Rhodes high school and taught in a rural school near Rhodes for about a year.

She was married to Guy M. Thompson, June 11, 1913, at Marshalltown. They moved from Rhodes to Olin on Sept. 1, 1913 and lived most of their married life in Olin. Her husband died on May 22, 1944. She continued to live in Olin until Oct. 7, 1968 when failing health made it necessary for her to enter the Brandt Nursing home, Wyoming. On April 21, 1970, she was moved to Senior Homes, Inc., at Monticello.

Soon after coming to Olin, she affiliated with the United Brethren church, now St. Paul's United Methodist church. She served for several years as financial secretary, for some time on the Board of Trustees of the church, as well as in other official capacities. She was a long time member of the Ladies Aid of the church and was a member of the Alturist club for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn, Mrs. Kenneth Leggett, Onslow, and Ruth, Mrs. Vernie Kreger, Olin; and the following grandchildren, Mrs. Janet Rae Dawson, Marion; Mrs. Carol Sue Horne, Cedar Rapids; James K. Leggett, Monticello; Gary J. Leggett, U. S. Navy; Jerry L. Leggett, Onslow; Lee E. Kreger, Des Moines; and Jon W. Kreger, Olin; and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Claire Thompson, who died in January, 1969; her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
