19 March 1970 - The Anamosa Eureka

OLIN - Leonard Albert Hartwig, 59, died Wednesday, March 11, at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held at St. John American Lutheran church, Olin, on Friday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Harold Tegtmeier conducted the service. Interment was in the Olin cemetery. Hayden's Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers included George Zirkelbach, Alex Inglis, Carl Markmann, Laverne Cruise, John Clark and Laverne Guhl.

Mrs. Kenneth Zimmerman was organist. Mrs. Kenneth Guhl was soloist. Selections included "Prayer" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."

He was born March 9, 1911, son of Karl E. and Anna C. Westphal Hartwig, on a farm near Hale. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran church, Olin, where he was a lifetime member. He attended a rural school near Hale and was graduated from the Olin high school with the class of 1929. He attended business college in Monroe, Mich.

On March 20, 1933, he was united in marriage to Magda Petersen. They lived on a farm west of Hale for 28 years. They moved to Hale in 1961 where they assumed operation of the store and postoffice and where he lived until his death.

He was responsible for reorganizing the Hale township 4-H clubs and also for the organization of the Hale Historical society, serving as its first president.

Survivors include his wife, Magda; one daughter, Karen, Mrs. Henry Biere, Anamosa; two sons, Loren, Olin; and Mark, Eldridge; five grandchildren; two sisters, Emma, Mrs. Walter Reber, and Ella, Mrs. Arthur Burgard, both of Monroe, Mich.; two brothers, Robert, Lisbon; and Ernest, Olin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Louis.
