MONTICELLO - Richard Andrew Cartano, 83, president of the Monticello state bank, for the last 20 years, died Monday evening, July 12, in John McDonald hospital.

Funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Goettsch funeral home with Rev. R. V. Gildner officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

Mr. Cartano was born Dec. 9, 1870, in Waubeek the second youngest of 11 children of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Cartano. Family later lived on a farm near Waubeek and then moved to Springville, where they engaged in a small business.

Active in bank affairs until his death, Mr. Cartano began his business career as a livestock buyer for the late George Lovell. Subsequently he represented the Monticello state bank and in 1914 was elected a director. In 1934 he succeeded the late Henry M. Carpenter as president.

He moved to Monticello in 1891 and was married Jan. 17, 1893 to Jennie Mae Campbell, Springville, who preceded him in death Nov. 2, 1914.

Surviving are three children, Mrs. B. E. Abel and Wilbur Cartano, Monticello, and Mrs. Elfriede Freshwaters, Keota, a sister and seven grandchildren.
