Carol Hanssen, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022 at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications of heart surgery, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Surviving are her husband, Pete Ponder; two daughters, Marcia (Brent) Carr and Kari Jones; two stepchildren, Nicole (Dan) Traxinger and Douglas (Jolene) Ponder; and five grandchildren, Hailey, Rylan, Morgan, Megan and Aubree. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son and daughter; her

first husband, Robert; a son-in-law, Andrew Jones; and her siblings, Roger Zumbach and Doris Anderson.

Carol K. Zumbach was born July 14, 1944, in Monticello, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edward and Viola Paulsen, Zumbach. Carol graduated from the Coggon High School in 1962. She then went to work at Collins Radio.

Carol married Robert Hanssen on Nov. 8, 1964, at Peace Lutheran Church, Ryan. The couple farmed near Scotch Grove. Carol worked at the Dime Store in Monticello, Monty Paint and Paper. She retired from St. John’s Day Care in 2010. Carol married Lyman (Pete) Ponder on Oct. 28, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Monticello during the summer and Arizona in the winter.
