MONTICELLO - Funeral services for George Manternach, 53, prominent Jones county farmer, were held Saturday, Jan. 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Monticello, with burial in Sacred Heart cemetery.

Mr. Manternach died at about noon Wednesday, Dec. 30, in a Cedar Rapids hospital of injuries received in a fall in a corn crib at his farm home south of Monticello.

He was working high the cupola on the crib when he lost his footing and fell about 10 feet landing on his back on a streel brace rod. His sons were unable to lower their father to the ground so a doctor and ambulance and finally the Monticello fire department were called.

After hoisting the injured man to the top of the cupola, he was lowered to the ground and rushed to the Cedar Rapids hospital. He suffered two broken vertebrae and three broken ribs.

Rev. Carl Kurt, brother-in-law of the deceased, was celebrant of the requiem high mass, with Rev. Matt Manternach, Cascade, an uncle, as deacon, and Rev. Elbert Manternach, Dubuque, a cousin, as sub deacon.

Mr. Manternach was born at Sand Springs March 6, 1900, son of Victor and Mary Kraemer Manternach. While he was still a boy, the family moved to Temple Hill where he attended school.

He was married to Clara Kurt at Cascade Jan. 31, 1927, and the couple moved to the farm they were operating at the time of his death. Mr. Manternach was a member of the Monticello council of Knight of Columbus and the Holy Name society of Sacred Heart parish and was a former parish trustee.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Paul, a student at Loras college, Dubuque; Carl, a student at St. Bernard's seminary, Dubuque; Melvin, stationed with the army at Fort Riley, Kan., James and Bernard at home; three daughters, Ruth, Mary Jane and Joyce, all at home; his mother, Cascade, five brothers and three sisters.
