December 21, 1953 - The Anamosa Journal

Mrs. R. L. LaChapelle, 65, long-time resident of Anamosa, died unexpectedly at 11:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18 at her home.

Funeral service was conducted at 1:30 Monday, Dec. 21, at Goettsch funeral home with Rev. Walter D. Wigger officiating. Burial was in Wilcox cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers were Ray Purcell, Verne Purcell, Warren Rees, William M. Thompson, Nick Nassif and Howard Robertson.

Madge Merle LaChapelle was born at Spirit Lake, Nov. 24, 1885, the first daughter of H. V. and Jennie Powers. She was one of nine children.

Year after her birth, the family moved to Anamosa, where she was graduated from high school. She also attended business college at Cedar Rapids and later held secretarial positions at the School for the Blind at Vinton, and Training School for boys at Eldora.

Mrs. LaChapelle served as private secretary for the warden at the Men's reformatory, Anamosa., at three different times.

It was at Eldora where she met R. L. LaChapelle and they were married June 12, 1912. One daughter, Madge Louise, now Mrs. John Nagel, Prairieburg, was born.

Mrs. LaChapelle was a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Fortnightly club and the First Congregational church. She took an active part in the church activities.

Surviving, besides her husband and daughter, are seven grandchildren, two brothers, Thomas Edward, Cedar Rapids, and Fred P., Anamosa; and three sisters, Mrs. Maude (Roy) Boxwell, Reseda, Calif.; Mrs. Mate (H.H.) Sunderlin, Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Mervin (Hubert) Stoddard, Minneapolis.
