MONTIELLO - Funeral service for Ray C. Hoag, 68, former Monticello mayor, were held Saturday, Oct. 24, at St. Luke's Methodist church, Monticello.

Mr. Hoag died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 21, at John McDonald hospital, Monticello. He was president of feather duster company at Monticello and was long active in civic affairs. He had been nominated for the Nov. 3 city elections as councilman-at-large.

His wife, three children, three brothers, four sisters and six grandchildren survive.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon from St. Luke's Methodist church for Ray C. Hoag, who died unexpectedly at the John McDonald hospital Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Hoag suffered a severe heart attack late Tuesday evening, having been in good health prior to that time.

He was a former Mayor and city councilman of the city of Monticello and a longtime businessman here. He had been nominated as a candidate for councilman at large in the forthcoming city election.

Ray C. Hoag was born in Monticello Nov. 11, 1884, the son of Elmer E. and Estella Hickok Hoag. He attended high school here graduating with the class of 1902 and later attended Cedar Rapids Business college.

As a young man he acquired a knowledge of the feather duster business and after succeeding his father in 1931, developed the local industry into the largest in its field under his expert management.

During World War II Mr. Hoag served as mayor for several years. He directed several War Bond drives during World War II.

Mr. Hoag had a keen interest in Monticello civil affairs and was a past president of the Monticello Commerical Club. Since 1931 he had served as a member of the board of Directors of the Monticello State Bank, attending his last board meeting the evening before his death.

He was a former officer of the Yeoman-Hoag company and a former member of the fair association. He was past president of the National Dusters Manufacturing Assocation and a past Rotarian. Mr. Hoag was a Member of the Monticello Gun Club, the K. of P. lodge, Burns Lodge A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite and El Kahir Shrine.

On Sept. 14, 1910 Mr. Hoag married Jessie Belle Hayes in Monticello. They became the parents of three children: Louis Raymond, Stuart Hayes and Shirley (Mrs. Tom Eden), all of whom survive his death. He is also survived by his wife; two brothers, Harry of Winter Gardens, Fla., and Louis of Maywood, Ill.; four sisters, Esther Hoag of Los Angeles, Mrs. Forrest Deischer, Mrs. Donald Sutherland and Mrs. Walter Brainerd, all of Monticello. Six grandchildren also survive his death.

Funeral services Saturday were conducted by Rev. R. V. Gildner and Rev. Roy V. Porter, present and former pastor of the Methodist church here. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were R. A. Cartano, J. A. Maurice, ? Cartano, H. W. Stuhler, J. A. Maurice, T. M. Redmond, J. J. Locher, C. G. Thomas, Arend Balster and Charles Luett. Casket bearers were George Harford, Harvey Harford, Winfield Hartman, Gerd Otten, Reuben Leggett, Gerhard Bartels.

Interment was in Oakwood cemetery.

Goettsch funeral home had charge of the services.
