THE DEATH OF HENRY BEHRENDS

It was with regret that the friends of Henry Behrends learned last Thursday evening at 8:45 o'clock of his death. He suffered an attack of lung fever several years ago, which left his heart in a weakened condition. Since that time he has suffered a great deal from leakage of the heart, which trouble finally caused his death. He was taken seriously ill January 1, of this year, and was compelled to take to his bed, last April. He never regained his former strength after that time.

The deceased was born December 9, 1858, at Ripel, Ant, Witmund, Germany. He was a son of the late Wilke and Hilke (nee Edzards) Behrends. In early infancy he was baptized, and was confirmed in the Lutheran church April 10, 1873. Mr. Behrends in company with his eldest brother, John Behrends, removed to the United States when the former was 19 years of age. The two brothers first lived at Greenview, Illinois, and later came to Iowa, and bought together the A.R. Doxsee farm on Bowen's Prairie. They continued to live on this farm until the marriage of John Behrends, when Henry Behrends continued to conduct the farm, which he owned at the time of his death. He and his wife removed to Monticello ten years ago.

Mr. Behrends was married to Miss Elise Zimmerman, February 26, 1885. He is survived by his wife and the following children, Willie, Bennie and Alva Behrends, Mrs. Henry Peters and Miss Anna Behrends. In addition to his family he is also survived by three brothers, John and William Behrends of Monticello, Gerd Behrends of Pomeroy; and by three sisters, Mrs. Albert Heiken of Castle Grove township and Mrs. Fred Reuter and Mrs. Henry Null of Monticello.
The funeral services were held last Monday afternoon at two o'clock. A prayer was offered at the family home, and final services were conducted in the German and English languages by Rev. S.M. Ide, the pastor of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran church, at the church. Burial was had at Oakwood cemetery.

Mr. Behrends was the first of the charter members of the local Lutheran church to pass away. In addition to being an organizer of the church he was especially active in its support. During the recent building campaign for the erection of the new church he took an active part. His was a life of service. He firmly believed in the saying "He profits most, who serves best." Never was the day too stormy, that he would not take the time and trouble to call upon a sick friend. He was a stickler for truth and honest, and believed in all that was good and true. He leaves many friends who will long revere his memory.
