The fifth traffic death of the year was recorded Sunday in Jones county as the result of a one-car collision near Stone City.

Killed was Dan Messerli, 42, Anamosa, who was the lone occupant in a 1965 Pontiac. The car was going north out of Stone City when it went off the road and traveled 152 ft. through the west ditch.

Messerli was thrown out of the car and the car then rolled partially on top of him. He died of a broken neck and head injuries.

Authorities estimate the time of the accident at about 4:45 a.m. The accident was discovered at 6:35 a.m. by Louis Merifield of Cedar Rapids, who was fishing in the area. The Pontiac was damaged $800.

Funeral services for Messerli were held Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Anamosa, with interment at St. Joseph cemetery, Wadena.

Messerli served as state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1965-66.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; two sons, Daniel and Charles; and a daughter, Christine.
