Funeral services for Marine Pfc. Dennis Allen Carlson, son of Mrs. George Carlson, Monticello, are pending at Decorah.

Pfc. Carlson, 19, was killed by a gun shot wound Saturday, Oct. 14, in the demilitarized zone in Vietnam. Mrs. Carlson, owner of the Dairy Sweet, received word of her son's death Friday morning from Major Frank of Waterloo and another Marine official.

This is the first Vietnam fatality with immediate family living in Monticello. Carlson's sister, Mrs. Walter Sunday, also lives in Monticello and manages the Dairy Sweet.

Following arrival of the body, which is expected Friday or Saturday, military services will be held at the Decorah Lutheran church, with the Rev. Richard Troust, Charles City, officiating.

Carlson entered the Marine Corps June 8, 1966, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He had been in Vietnam since May 11, 1967. On June 14 he suffered a leg wound while in action and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was born Sept. 27, 1948, at Decorah, and when he was a year old the family moved to Charles City, where he attended schools. He was a 1966 graduate of Charles City high school.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers.

Survivors include his mother and sister and grandmother, Mrs. Clarence Carlson, Decorah.
