18 October 1951 - Monticello Express

Donald Leroy Guilford, 18, Anamosa, was killed instantly at 6:30 last Thursday morning when his car was demolished in an accident 6 miles east of Cascade.

John Emert, also from Anamosa, riding with Guilford was injured when he was thrown from the Guilford car. Rushed by ambulance to the John McDonald Hospital, hospital authorities reported his condition as good. He suffered a fractured leg and lacerated chin.

Guilford and companion were coming over the brow of a hill on highway 151 when they crashed head-on into the side of a semi-trailer truck.

The force of the impact tore the engine and mounting from the Guilford car, strewing the highway with wreckage and throwing the car across the road.

The instrument panel and steering of the death car was smashed back against the front seat.

The semi-trailer was being driven by Maurice J. Thompson from Dubuque who escaped injury. The truck and trailer enroute to Dubuque is owned by Rawley interstate Transport Co., Dubuque, Ia. The undercarriage of the truck tractor was slightly damaged.

Donald Leroy Guilford, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R. Guilford, was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Cass township. He attended rural schools and high school in Monticello and Anamosa. At the time of his death he was employed on a county road project.

Funeral services were held from the St. Luke's Methodist Church here with Rev. Robert V. Gildner in charge. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. The Goettsch Funeral Home had charge of the service.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister and 3 brothers: Mrs. William Holub and Charles Gilford both of Monticello, and Raymond and Larry, at home.
