Final rites for Jacob Merfeld, 67, who died at his home in Monticello Sunday evening were held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Devaney Funeral home in Monticello to Sacred Heart church. Rev. Eugene Lorenz, pastor, offered the requiem high mass and delivered the sermon. Rev. Schillmoeller, Worthington, officiated at the grave in St. Paul's cemetery, Worthington.

Pallbearers were A. J. Stoll, Joe Hosch, Ed Offerman, Rudolph Flack, Alfred Lahey and Steve McDonnell.

He was born January 7, 1884 at Worthington, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Guidinger) Merfeld. He married Josephine Besler in 1909 in St. Paul's church, Worthington, by Rev. Cigrand. They farmed in the vicinity of Worthington and Cascade until 1938 when they moved to a farm in Castle Grove. In 1943 they retired to Monticello.

Surviving are his wife; five sons, Nicholas and Raymond of Dubuque, Henry of Marion, Lester and Albert of Monticello; three daughters, Mrs. Earl (Loretta) Brown of Manchester, Mrs. Al (Marie) Miller of Monticello and Mrs. John (Dolly) Janssen, Jr. of Coggon; four brothers, Leo of Bernard, Frank of Waterloo, Michael and Joe of Cascade; two sisters, Mrs. Paul Besler of Cascade and Mrs. Henry Derga of Anamosa, and 28 grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents, a daughter, Martha, two sisters and a brother.
