April 9, 1982 - Midland Times

Olin student Alison Zimmerman, 17, and Olin High School teacher Marcia Bandstra, 26, were killed in a car-semi accident on Highway 30 near Blairstown April 5.

Zimmerman was a passenger in a car driven by Brandstra. They had been on the way to a speech contest in Cedar Falls but decided to return home after experiencing car trouble.

Both Brandstra and Zimmerman were pronounced dead at the scene.

Alison Anne Zimmerman, the daughter of Kathleen and Kenneth Zimmerman who farm near Olin, was born September 10, 1964 and died April 5, 1982.

Alison was a member of the class of 1982, Olin High School, and had attended Olin School since kindergarten.

She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Olin, Church Choir, and Luther League.

Alison had won numerous awards in speech, drama, music, S and P handicapped program, Thespians, NHS, annual staff, school newspaper, student council, pep club and was a class officer. She was also the 1981-82 Pork Queen.

The Hayden Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral service with the Rev. Frank Philipp of St. John Lutheran, Olin, officiating.

Alison's family included Erin, a student at Iowa Wesleyan, Mt. Pleasant; Amy, a student at Central College, Pella, and Jon, at home.

April 16, 1982 - Midland Times

Services were held at 11 a.m., April 9, at St. John Lutheran Church, Olin, for Alison A. Zimmerman. Rev. Frank Philipp officiated. Organists were Mrs. Greg VonBehren and Mrs. Larry Scharff. Burial was in the Olin Cemetery.

Alison Anne Zimmerman, 17, died near Blairstown April 5.

She was born at Anamosa, September 10, 1964, the daughter of Kenneth and Kathleen James Zimmerman.

Alison was a senior at Olin Consolidated School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, choir, student council, band, Thespians, Yearbook Editor, Junior and Senior Class Officer, member of the 1981-82 Homecoming Court, an assistant to the special education class, and had received the All-State Festival speech award last year and again this year.

She also was reigning Jones County Pork Queen, and a volunteer counselor at Camp Courageous. She had received the Anne Sullivan Award for work with the handicapped.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Olin, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Luther League.

Surviving her are her parents; two sisters, Erin, a sophomore at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant, and Amy, a freshman at Central University of Iowa, Pella; one brother, Jon, at home; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Dillon, Lovila, Story of Olin.

Preceding her in death were her paternal grandfather and maternal grandparents.

Pallbearers were Denis Paulson, Mark Zimmerman, Brian Sanborn, William Liggett, Curtis Voelker, and Dean Frankfurt.
