11 May 1967 - Monticello Express

The third and fourth traffic deaths of the year were recorded Monday in Jones county as the result of two separate accidents.

The two victims were Wayne Lurkens, 19, Anamosa, who was killed in a head-on collision near Anamosa at 11:15 p.m., and Robert Steffen, 21, Cascade, who died at 3:50 a.m. from injuries received in a one-car crash Sunday evening near Cascade.

Steffen suffered multiple skull fractures and brain damage in the one-car crash about 7 p.m. Sunday on highway 151 a half mile west of Cascade.

Loras Edward Lyons, 24, Route 2, Cascade, driver of the car in which Steffen was riding, received multiple facial lacerations, abrasions and bruises. He was listed in "fairly good" condition at University hospitals, Iowa City.

Authorities said Lyons apparently lost control of the eastbound car on a curve, went into the ditch on the south side of the road and traveled a considerable distance before hitting a culvert in the driveway leading to the Roy Greenwood farm house. The car came to a stop on the driveway.

The car, a 1966 Chevrolet, received an estimated $1,800 to the front end. Investigation of the accident is still underway, Highway Patrolman Tom Toner said. He was assisted by John Murphy of the Cascade police department.

Services for Steffen will be held this morning (Thursday) at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's church, Cascade, with burial in St. Patrick's cemetery, Epworth.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Steffen, Epworth; two brothers, Lloyd, Dubuque, and Loras, Epworth; two sisters, Mrs. Dale Kean, Cascade, and Lois Ann, at home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lehman, Sr., Worthington.
