MONTICELLO - Services were held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 14, for Mrs. J. Carl Rickels, 87, at St. John Lutheran church, with interment in St. John cemetery. The Rev. C. C. Gutekunst officiated.

Mrs. Rickels died at John McDonald hospital Saturday afternoon.

Johanna H. Hanken Rickels was born Feb. 19, 1879, near Monticello, the daughter of Ahrend and Johanna Herren Hanken. She was educated in the Monticello area schools.

She married J. Carl Rickels Feb. 19, 1901, and the couple moved to Pomeroy for a few years, but later returned to the Scotch Grove community, where they made their home. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1955, a daughter, Mary Ellen, four brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include: two sons, Gerd and Willis Rickels, both of Monticello; five daughters, Mrs. Jacob (Cora) Leesekamp of Dallas, Tex., Mrs. Fred W. (Olive) Minney and Mrs. Michael (Lucille) Stahle of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. John (Norma) Paulsen of Onslow and Mrs. Clarence (Josephine) Edwards of Clinton; 12 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were William C. Minney, LeRoy G. Rickels, Richard B. Rickels, Gerald R. Edwards, Robert F. Rickels and Adolph O. Bohlken.
