MONTICELLO - Funeral services for Dr. Millington F. Carpenter, 78, were held at Goettsch funeral home Monday afternoon, Jan. 9. The Rev. Robert Holtzheimer of Trinity Episcopal church in Iowa City conducted the services. Interment was in Oakwood cemetery.

Dr. Carpenter, associate professor emeritus of English at the University of Iowa, died at John McDonald hospital Friday morning, following an illness of several months.

He was born Oct. 21, 1888 at Monticello, the son of Henry M. and Mary Farwell Carpenter. He attended the Monticello schools, graduating in 1907. He received his B.A. degree in 1911 from the University of Chicago, after which he taught in Houston, Texas.

He served in the Army during World War I and in 1919 began teaching English at the University of Iowa, remaining there until his retirement in 1963.

He received his Ph.D from the University in 1924. From 1920 until 1950, Dr. Carpenter supervised practice teaching at the University and headed the English department of the University high school, coaching debating teams, directing plays and advising on student publications.

He also coached track there, having participated in track himself, under Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, and helped form the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Athletic conference.

He taught literature core courses in the college of Liberal arts from 1950 until 1957. From then until 1964 he taught one literature course each semester.

In 1963 he established the Millington F. Carpenter professorship of literacy criticism at the University.

Since 1953 he had served as a director of the Monticello State bank and on the board of trustees of John McDonald hospital. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal church in Iowa City and histeriographer of the Episcopal diocese of Iowa.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. H. M. Carpenter, Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Halstead M. Carpenter.

Honorary pallbearers were the directors of the Monticello State bank: Arend Balster, Jr., David Cuckler, Cecil Goettsch, J. E. Heiserman, John Locher, James Maurice, Louis Morf, John Shover, Harry Stuhler and C. G. Thomas.
