MONTICELLO - Charles Eugene Holmes, Seaman 3rd Class, USN, died at Balboa Naval hospital, San Diego, Calif., Saturday after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage on board the U.S.S. Hammer. Mr. Holmes, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Holmes, Jr., was 31.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Monticello. Friends may call at Delaney funeral home at 7 p.m. today (Thursday). Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery.

Charles Eugene Holmes was born Sept. 6, 1934 at Monticello and received his education at Sacred Heart school. He enlisted in the Navy in June of 1952, served active duty in the Korean conflict and had returned from eight months of duty in Viet Nam Jan. 1.

Mr. Holmes is survived by his parents, four sisters, Mrs. Harry (Betty) Prull of Monticello, Mrs. Charles (Rosalie) Mrstik of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Harms of Anamosa, one brother, Robert of Monticello, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Sam Holmes, Sr., of Monticello.
