WYOMING - Walter E. Bates was born Oct. 28, 1885, in Hand county, South Dakota territory and died Dec. 5, at the Eleineck rest home, Onslow.

The Bates family came to Iowa in 1896 where Mr. Bates attended school in Wyoming until 1904. In 1905 he and an older brother, Bert, went to Cody, Wyo., where they made their homes, taking an active part in settling and developing that country.

In 1916 he was married to Loma Stevens and they became the parents of five children, living all of their married life on a ranch near Cody. Mrs. Bates died in 1951. In 1953 Mr. Bates was married to Pauline Shaffer Bramer and had since made his home during the winter at Wyoming, Ia. Summer months were spent on the north fork of the Shoshone river, near the east entrance to Yellowstone National park.

He is survived by his second wife; four children, Steve and Betty Lou (Mrs. Ned) Lufkin of Cody, Jean (Mrs. Homer) Dean of Craig, Colo., and Margery, (Mrs. Ted) Hensel of Federal Way, Wash.; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanette Bates, Escondido, Calif., and Mildred (Mrs. W. R.) McCann, Hopewell, Va.

Services and burial were held Dec. 9 in Cody, Wyo.
