MONTICELLO - John Behrends Zimmerman, 94, former Monticello clothier died at the John McDonald hospital at 11:45 p.m. June 4 after being a patient there for seven months. Funeral services will be held from the St. Matthew Lutheran church Friday, June 7, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Anton Kirkegaard officiating and burial at Oakwood.

Born March 11, 1869, he was the son of Arend and Anna Grumm Zimmerman. He was married to Mary Poppe of Castle Grove in the Poppe home Feb. 24, 1898. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in '48 and their 60th wedding anniversary in '58. As a young man, he operated a grocery wagon out of Amber for two years, then became a clerk in the Erickson Clothing store, purchasing it three years later and moving the business to the store now known as the Shaffer Clothing store. He continued in the clothing business for 53 years, selling it August 5, 1948, and retiring. He was the last of his family and the last of the charter member of the St. Matthew Lutheran church.

Survivors include his wife Mary at their home at 215 S. Sycamore St., in Monticello and one son, Alva, of Monticello, and one grandson. He is preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers.

Pallbearers include Alva Behrends, Williams J. Zimmerman, Carl Mardorf, George Senst, Paul Gerdes and Louis Ahrenken.
