14 August 1947 - The Anamosa Journal

Charles Eby, 34, World war II veteran, of near Scotch Grove, died of a heat stroke Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Roy Streeper farm near Anamosa. His wife and two sons, Bobby, 4, and Jimmy, 3, survive.

His death was Jones county's first heat fatality.

Eby, who had been threshing at the J. E. Husman farm, became ill before the crew finished work and went to the neighboring farm of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Streeper, where he died an hour later.

Anamosa doctor was called but Eby was dead before he arrived.

The body is at the Goettsch funeral home, Monticello, where services are being arranged.

Eby was born Jan. 22, 1913, at Eby's Mill, northeast of Scotch Grove, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Eby. He was married May 26, 1941, to Lois Streeper. He was a member of the Monticello Presbyterian church.

Veteran of three and a half years of army service, he served in the European theatre.

In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his father at Eby's Mill; one brother, Raymond Eby, Monticello, and three sisters, Mrs. Lyle Callahan, Rochester, Minn., Mrs. Arnold Hanken, Chicago, and Mrs. Owen Sutherland, Iowa City.
