19 June 1947 - The Anamosa Journal

Carl Oltmanns, 27, was accidently killed in a freak shooting accident Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at his farm home between Anamosa and Morley.

Bullet from a rifle, fired by his wife's brother, Robert Houstman, 14, who was shooting birds, ricocheted from a hard object not known, struck Oltmanns at the base of the skull and lodged in his brain.

He died shortly afterward without regaining consciousness.

Coroner Frank Harrington, Wyoming, pronounced his death accidental.

Robert makes his home with his sister, Mrs. Margaret Houstman, mother of the victim's wife, is also staying at the Oltmanns home and was there when the accident happened. Both she and Mrs. Oltmanns saw the tragedy.

Oltmanns, who was repairing a fence when the bullet felled him, had planned to have dinner and then take his family to see the high waters of the Wapsipinicon.

Funeral service for Mr. Oltmanns will be Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's American Lutheran church, Anamosa, preceded by a prayer service at the Smykil Home for Funerals at 1:30 p.m. Rev. H. L. Buesing, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.

Mr. Oltmanns was born March 27, 1920, in Cass township, son of John and Mate Oltmanns. He attended Cass township schools. One June 8, 1944, he married Elna June Houstman. For the last two years he farmed on the Raleigh Shoop place, three miles northwest of Morley.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his father; a twin brother, Albert, another brother, Emil and a sister, Mrs. Marie Capron, all of Anamosa.

Funeral service for Carl Oltmanns, 27, Anamosa farmer who was killed in a shooting accident Tuesday of last week, was held Friday afternoon, June 20, in St. Paul's American Lutheran church.

Rev. H. L. Buesing, pastor, officiated, and the hymns, "Whispering Hope" and "Rock of Ages" were sung by Rev. and Mrs. Lowell Dickinson, accompanied by Mrs. Buesing, organist.

Casket bearers were William Griffith, Louis, Donald and Eddie Folken, Gerhard Kray and Walter Schaffer. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.
