HOGAN, HEERY, APPLEBY

William Andrew Hogan died Monday at 6:45 a.m. at Mercy hospital in Anamosa after being in ill health for the last six months.

Affectionately known as "Sheriff," Mr. Hogan served Jones county in that capacity for 17 years, from 1888 to 1894 and from 1905 to 1916.

High Requiem mass was read at St. Patrick's church Wednesday at 9 a.m. by a nephew, Rev. James F. Delay, Lawler, with Rev. J. A. McMahon as deacon and Rev. Ivan Boyd as sub deacon. Sermon was given by Rev. William Holub, Dubuque.

Interment was in the Immaculate Conception cemetery at Castle Grove. Serving as casketbearers were Phil B. Daly, Anamosa; J. J. Locher, H. M. Carpenter, jr., Dr. M. F. Hogan, all of Monticello; Ed Pospishil, Martelle, and Neal Conway, Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Hogan was born in Jones county on Dec. 25, 1866, the son of Dennis M. Hogan and Susan Bagen Hogan. He was educated at Monticello high school and farmed until his election as sheriff.

He was a partner in a grocery and meat store in Anamosa from 1895 to 1896 and in a Monticello clothing store from 1897 to 1897. In 1896 to 1897, he bought and shipped horses from Monticello to Brazil and Switzerland. Mr. Hogan served as federal land appraiser for the Federal Lank bank of Omaha and Joint Land bank of Chicago from 1915 until 1918 when he retired.

He owned a farm which is tenanted by Ed Pospishil, Martelle, and a home at 112 South Sales St. in Anamosa where he made his home for many years.

Mr. Hogan was a member of the Jones county Farm Bureau, Modern Woodmen of America, Mystic Workers, Knights of Columbus and served for some years after 1908 as treasurer of the St. Patrick's church at Anamosa.

He was a baseball enthusiast.

A bachelor, Mr. Hogan is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Heery, Cascade, and Mrs. Joseph Appleby, Monticello.

Nephews and nieces who survive him include: Rev. Delay; Dennis Hogan, Coggon; Joseph J. Delay and William M. Delay, Monticello; and Matt McGovern, Independence; Miss Marcella Heery, Cascade, Miss Cathryn McGovern, Independence; and Mrs. John Kane, Waterloo.
