30 August 1945 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service for Henry D. Miller, 78, prominent Jones Co. farmer, who died Sunday at his home near Morley, was held Tuesday afternoon at the Green Center church, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Smykil home was in charge.

Mr. Miller was Democratic state senator from the Jones-Cedar county district from 1933 to 1939. He was widely known as a breeder of purebred Aberdeen-Angus cattle and was president of the American Aberdeen Angus Assn. in 1939 and 1940.

The Miller herd, one of the oldest and largest in Iowa, was founded in 1912, when Henry bought out a neighbor. Prior to that time he had been a breeder of Shorthorn cattle for 20 years, but disposed of them in 1913 to take over the Angus.

At the peak of his career he maintained between 300 and 400 breeding cows on his 1200 acre farm.

Miller operated a store in Morley and a branch in Martelle from 1900 to 1917 and was distributor for the Buick Motor Co. of Cedar Rapids from 1910 to 1926.

He had been ill for several weeks at the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Florence, who is superintendent of schools at Morley, and a brother, John H., near Morley.
