25 October 1945 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service for Louis Ortgies, who died at his home near Anamosa early Tuesday morning, will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at St. Paul's American Lutheran church, Rev. H. L. Buesing will officiate, and burial will be at Riverside cemetery. Smykil Home for Funeral is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral service for Louis Ortgies, 50, who died at a Monticello hospital early Tuesday morning was held Friday afternoon at St. Paul's American Lutheran church. Rev. H. L. Buesing was the officiating pastor and burial was made at Riverside cemetery. Smykil Home for Funerals was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Ed Folkers, George Rickels, Ernest Dirks, James Kraus, Fred Eiben and Wilken Behrends.

Louis Ortgies, son of Luebbe Ortgies and Meta Eilers Ortgies, was born in Scotch Grove township June 21, 1895. He was baptized July 28, 1895 by the pastor, Rev. Frederick VonStrobe. He attended the Castle Grove Graded School No., 5. He was confirmed April 4, 1909 under Rev. Hans Naether.

Dec. 13, 1917, Louis was married to Miss Dena Grace Schaefer by Rev. W. Streeb. After one year on the farm, Louis enlisted in military service July 25, 1918, and was mustered out after the end of the war Jan. 19, 1919. For 18 years the family remained on the father's homestead until in 1936 they purchased their own farm one mile northeast of Anamosa which remained their home since.

The union was blessed with eight children, two sons and six daughters, of which one daughter, Byrdena, Mrs. Allan Poppe, preceded the father in death in November, 1944.

Mr. Ortgies health began to fail him in the fall of 1943, and he became gradually worse until his death.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Rudolph, Monticello; Lawrence, Anamosa; five daughters, Helen, San Francisco, Calif.; Minnie, Mrs. Gerd Tuetham, Anamosa; Laura, San Francisco, Calif.; Dorothy and Wilma, Anamosa; three granddaughters, June, Reva Tuethan and Judy Ortgies; one brother, Henry Ortgies, Monticello; four sisters, Mrs. John Tapken, Monticello; Mrs. Henry Ulferts, Mrs. Herman Schaefer and Mrs. John Ulferts, Anamosa.

He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church and of St. Paul's church in Anamosa for the last nine years. Mr. Ortgies had been ill for about three months.
