29 July 1945 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service for Herman G. Dirks, 62, who died suddenly at two o'clock Thursday morning at his home in Anamosa, was held Sunday afternoon at the Wayne Lutheran church. Smykil Home for Funerals was in charge of arrangements, and Rev. F. H. Kehren was the officiating minister.

Vocal numbers were given by Rev. Kehren, Lena Helgens, and Hildregard Kehren. Pallbearers were Robert Sayer, Carl Dirks, Henry Hults, George Schoon, Fred Helgens and John Reiken. Interment was in Wayne Zion cemetery.

Death of Mr. Dirks was attributed to an attack of heart disease. His father preceded him in death on the same day, July 19, in the year 1916.

Herman Gerhard Dirks was born April 18, 1882, in Wayne township, Jones county, Ia., son of Henrich Melchers Dirks and Trinke Margareta Hoefing Dirks. He was baptized June 12, 1882, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Palm Sunday, April 11, 1897.

He chose farming to be his life's vocation. On account of an accident, which necessitated a 17 weeks stay at a Monticello hospital, he stayed with his father at Monticello from 1907 to 1916, in which year he was married to Meta Helene Lousie Rieken on March 2. They observed their silver wedding anniversary in 1941.

They lived on their farm in Wayne township from 1916 to 1923, and in Anamosa from 1923 to 1929. They returned to their farm in Wayne township July 17, 1929, and lived there until July, 1930. In March, 1931, they moved to their home on Walnut street, in Anamosa.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Meta Dirks; two brothers, John H. Dirks and family, Langworthy; Henry M. Dirks and family, Anamosa; two sisters, Mrs. Meta Folkers and family, Langworthy; Mrs. Fred Hults and family, Cass township. One brother, D. J. Dirks, preceded him in death in August, 1941.
